    Quonset Hut Homes

A Modern & Affordable Housing Solution

Quonset hut homes offer maximum space and a range of customization options, making them an excellent choice for an open-concept home. The lack of beams or supports allows for maximum design flexibility and the opportunity to create a living space that fits your personal style and needs. If you're interested in a mid-century modernist design, consider building a Quonset hut house.

What is a Quonset Hut Home?

Quonset hut homes are a type of prefabricated steel structure characterized by its semi-cylindrical shape and versatility as a modern house-building solution. The building shell is supplied as a bolt-together kit that can be erected in as little as 10-14 days. The interior is then insulated and framed to create various living spaces.

Why Choose a Quonset Hut Home?

Quonset huts are a cost-effective and fast construction option that can be customized to your specific needs.

They are durable and weather-resistant, making them a great choice for homes in areas that experience severe weather conditions or for off-grid living.

Also, steel's inherent flame-retardant properties (combined with modern fireproofing) have proven extremely resilient in fire-prone areas.

Metal arch buildings are both green and built to last. They’re constructed from high-quality, up-cycled, Galvalume® steel, which resists corrosion and requires minimal maintenance.

Due to their unique shape, Qhomes are incredibly spacious inside, with fully open clear-span living areas, making them ideally suited to open-concept layouts. With available heights up to 30 feet, you can include a second story by adding internal framing.

Another benefit of choosing Quonset Hut houses is that they are modular by design. Create additional living space by removing an end wall and attaching more two-foot wide arch panels.

With some imagination (or the assistance of an architect), Quonset structures can be customized and adapted to suit your chosen aesthetic.

    Common Questions about Quonset Homes

Detailed below are some of the questions we hear the most from buyers. For additional details about planning, designing, and constructing a Quonset building, see our main Quonset huts page for more details.

    What is a Qhome?

A Quonset hut house (Qhome) is an alternative home construction option erected using a Quonset building kit, consisting of curved galvanized steel panels that bolt together to create a semicircular or half-cylindrical shaped home. Quonset homes are gaining popularity because of their ease of construction and affordability, making them an excellent choice for those who want to DIY their own homes on a budget. Plus, their distinctive shape adds a touch of character to any setting. We offer Quonset Hut Homes for sale that are known for their durability, affordability, and versatility. That's why many people are choosing these homes over traditional housing options.

What style of Quonset makes the best home?

The three most common arch building styles are the S, P, and Q. If you plan on having a width of fewer than 30 feet, we recommend either the S or P models to maximize space along the edges of the building. The Q-model is best suited for widths over 30 feet.

    Quonset_Hut_Homes_6_Quonset_Hut_Home_Styles

What type of insulation is used in Quonset houses?

Most types of standard insulation can be used to insulate a Quonset structure. The most popular options, though, are fiberglass blanket insulation and spray foam insulation. The advantage of spray foam is that this can be left exposed, whereas fiberglass will need to be covered with a layer of plywood for visual appearance and to reduce the amount of fiberglass dust.

Can you drywall the interior of a Quonset?

Typically, the curved profile of a Quonset hut home is finished in a thin layer of plywood that will form to the structure's shape. The walls can then be finished with drywall (and painted) as you would with a traditional home.

    Quonset Hut Home Styles

Three common styles are available for Quonset homes. All three options are suitable for residential applications, but if you plan on having a width of less than 9m, we recommend either the S or P models to maximize space along the edges of the building. The Q-model is best suited for widths over 9m.

    Q-Model
    Traditional full arch design
    Cheapest & fastest to build
Width: 20 feet to 100 feet
Height: 10 feet to 40 feet
    Length: 10 feet and over
    S Model
Arched roof with straight side walls
Ideal for areas with high winds & snow
Width: 16 feet to 50 feet
Height: 10 feet to 40 feet
    Length: 10 feet and over
    P Model
More traditional look with a pitched roof
    More costly than other models
Width: 13 feet to 30 feet
Height: 12 feet to 16 feet
    Length: 10 feet and over
