ZHM Huawu Steel Modular Transport Beam System Steel works In Operation for Container Crane At Port Terminal

Relocating harbor container cranes are a costly and time-consuming process during which the crane is idle and blocks the quay area. Transport beams are a proven method for relocating these cranes in one piece. Modular transport beams are used to insert the beams underneath the cranes and then, using their hydraulics, gradually lift the cranes out of their tracks on the quayside. ZHM Huawu Steel's in-house engineering has now developed a 3600-ton capacity, modular beam with smart couplings, adding greater flexibility and efficiency to the process.

Due to its modular design, all parts of the beam can fit into four standard containers. This results in rapid mobilization, easy transport and lower transport costs. The beam is available in variable lengths and configurations so it can be used for any type of harbor container crane and rail widths. They can be extended up to 48 meters long with additional beam parts. And while modular in design, the Containerized transport beams (CTB)  is fast and easy to assemble due to smart couplings. Only a small crew and an 80-ton capacity mobile crane or container handler are required to offload and assemble the beams.

ZHM Huawu Steel was awarded the manufacture of an innovative heavy duty modular beam transport system with adjustable lengths, capable of carrying heavy assemblies for loadout such as container cranes, offshore towers. ZHM Huawu Steel carried out high precision, heavy duty fabrication.

The working scope was to produce 10 heavy transport beams, for a total of over 200 tons. These beams were to be utilised in a reusable platform for skidding large and heavy items for example, an oil platform on and off the sea.

There are 6 central steel beams with lugs on both ends and 4 end beams with lifting lugs on one end only - to form a two sided 55 metre length platform that can be rolled along the ground. 

Each of these beams was 1.55 metres height, 1.6 metres width and 10.7 metres in length. The steel grade high tensile steel grade S355J2G3. A complex configuration of lug holes that had to align in different planes meant the finished tolerances were critical in acceptance by the client of the steel beams. Qualified and highly skilled welders completed challenging welds due to difficult access within the beam steel structure. The beams were trial fitted in several configurations to ensure they mate together with no issues.

The project was successfully delivered in the United Kingdom in July 2013 and since been reused for numerous heavy lifts.
