Function Requirements and Applicable Codes of Reefer Racks

Part 1: The structural steel reefer racks shall be designed to satisfy the following function requirements:


1.Reefer technicians shall able to comfortably reach the cables and panels on the reefer containers at any position within the stack and at any level of the access platform, without over-reaching or climbing the handrail. 


2. To allow efficient and safe access for plugging/unplugging and monitoring dfstacked refrigerated containers.  

3.To provide suitable access to predominantly High Cube stacked reefer containers without having deviation between the reefer rack floor and the container floor at the respective tiers.


4.To provide a safe routing for electrical connections from the site-wide electrical network (via an electrical pit in the foundations) to the plug sockets for each reefer container, including allowance for cable trays, distribution boards switchgear and the like which may be mounted within the envelope or undelthe reefer racks.


5.To suit one of the Terminals standard designs for reefer block arrangements, based on the container handling equipment, as shown on the Definition Drawings and in Appendix I"Design Criteria".


6.Stairs, handrails and gate arrangements, including at ground level, shall be arranged to optimise safe access and eqress, considering orientation of the racks relative to the movement of container handling equipment and other passing vehicles, access to/from reefer passages , easy access to reefers and reefer plugs, access to electrical pits and panels, and emergency access/egress

Part II. Applicable Codes


The popular standards applicable for reefer rack steel structures,  is based on Eurocode standards including but not limited to:


(a) EN 1090: Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures (all parts)
(b) EN 1992: Eurocode 2 – Design of concrete structures
(c) EN 1993: Design of Steel Structures
(d) EN 10025: Hot rolled products of structural steels (all parts)
(e) EN 13586: Cranes. Access
(f) ISO 14122: Safety of machinery — Permanent means of access to machinery


 Other relevant codes include:


(a) ACI 318M: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete
(b) ASTM A36: Standard Specification for Carbon Structural Steel
