These four new state-of-the-art gantry type reefer towers highlight the port authority's significant investment and support of the New Zealand South Island’s refrigerated freight market. Opening this week, the reefer rack towers significantly improve the management of reefer containers, from safety through to functionality.

In 2018 our New Zealand client approached ZHM Huawu with a brief for improving capacity, efficiency, safety and flexibility with regards to the organisation and storage of refrigerated containers (reefer containers) at the port. At the time the end client's facilities only allowed reefer containers to be stacked two high, and access to the containers to plug in power sources was via ladders. They required a tailored, two-sided solution which would allow the stacking of both 20-foot and 40-foot containers fourhigh. In addition, the end client's comprehensive approach to safety on site meant they wanted a solution which allows ‘zero interactions between man and machine’.

In consultation with various parties,  the ZHM Huawu Steel team began making the condept design, detailed design and construction design to developing new reefer tower concept designs in August 2018.  

The multi-million-dollar upgrade, completed at the start of May, has doubled the port's refrigerated shipping container capacity and will enable further expansion as the port upgrades to meet future requirements.

A formal karakia/blessing was held at the Reefer Towers before our Container Terminal Team begins working on the site.

Last year, our client facilitated the export of 31,447 twenty-foot reefer containers filled with premium New Zealand products destined for the global market. They also imported 11,566 reefers containing bananas, frozen dairy projects and other chilled goods enjoyed by New Zealand South Islanders every day.

Each tower can supply 100 refrigerated shipping containers, each equipped to chill or freeze its contents at the optimum temperature to ensure they arrive at overseas ports in prime condition..

Also, Each Reefer Rack Gantry tower is 60-metres long and stands at 10-metres high and includes the world’s most advanced reefer monitoring system, providing real-time data on temperature and energy consumption.  ZHM group also make the design, engineering and supervision of construction to complete the comprehensive electrical fit out of four new 'reefer' refrigerated container towers complete with air conditioning, communication, and security systems, as well as building two new containerized electrical substations. 

Health and safety improvements are another substantial benefit gained by these reefer rack gantry towers.

Port Owner Reefer Care Officer Ron Crosby has worked on the wharf for over ten years, tasked with ensuring the reefer containers filled with the South Island’s frozen vegetables, frozen meat and fish and chilled dairy and meat are kept at the perfect temperature.

Throughout the project, Ron has been involved in giving feedback on the towers to the design and construction team ZHM Huawu Steel, ensuring the towers tick all the boxes.

A cool change for the better
New Zealand Port Owner wanted to change the way they manage refrigerated containers. Our involvement started with the business case and we are proud to have subsequently led this project through design and construction. We added real value by engaging effectively with users and stakeholders throughout the project. The new towers are a great asset for our client and enable safe and efficient management of refrigerated containers.

A new solution for an old problem
Refrigerated containers were historically managed by our client's container terminal in typical straddle stacking blocks with a height limitation (2-high) due to the use of ladders for personnel access. This was an inefficient use of space in an already congested terminal and posed significant man vs machine risks.

We managed the design of a reefer tower solution to meet our client's immediate needs while also considering future growth and expansion. The design had a strong focus on pre-fabrication to minimise the disruption to container terminal operations during construction and installation. A detailed staging plan issued at tender was key to the project success as this provided clarity for all parties regarding site interfaces and limitations. The work was tendered in two packages but resulted in the appointment of a smaller competent contractor to deliver all works under a single contract. The project was an excellent success and delivered a high-quality product on time and budget.

Points of interest
The towers enable 4-high container stacking (20’ and 40’), eliminates man vs machine risk, and considers future terminal automation.
The modular tower structures and electrical system allow for easy replication and expansion as terminal growth requires.
No drilling, cutting or welding was allowed on-site during construction to preserve the integrity of the galvanised paint system. This required a high level of integration between structural and electrical design.

The construction methodology required limited working at height. Each module was assembled in a jig at ground level (i.e. horizontal) with all handrails fitted before being lifted onto the tower foundations.
